Janelle and I have been in a relationship for almost a decade. Over the years, we’ve talked about being business owners. We came up with various ideas, but none really stood out because we were trying to differentiate ourselves from other businesses. It all started when I felt like I needed a new look. Not a new look in how I dressed, but in how I wanted to represent the face of this handsome chocolate devil. I’ve always had facial hair. What man doesn’t? The difference with me is just that I wanted to be different. First, I was rocking a baby smooth face. That period in my life was cute and all, but fellas, when you’ve been around, you tend to want to separate from the rest. Be your own person. Be your own you. After the baby face, I started rocking the long chin hair usually seen worn on Asian men (I use this example as a reference). My father-in-law would tease me and say I looked Japanese. My wife loved it. She would pull on it, twirl my “beard” with her fingers, and she would even braid it, which drove me crazy. I low-key think that started my own “obsession” with growing a full beard (shhhhhh don’t tell her I said that LOL). Seriously, though, I’ve always loved standing out from the crowd. Growing my beard, my way was no exception. Growing my beard wasn't easy because I didn’t know how I would look with it. I wasn’t sure if my beard would have been full or patchy. As I started my journey, I started to see potential in my beard, even though it wasn’t how I imagined it to be. My wife found me a great barber who helped me shape and groom my beard. Zach, bro, good looking. With my growth came admiration and, believe it or not, criticism. Admiration for the fullness and length. I must give credit where credit is due to my wife. She is the queen of all things products, whether it’s for your hair or skin. She had me and our boys walking around like beauty queens with all the natural this and natural that she made us use on our hair and skin. The products helped my beard, but what I noticed is that the moisture didn’t last. My beard would feel dry after a while. Criticism for the gray hairs. Being me, I didn’t care. I kept rocking my salt and pepper, will continue to do so, and look good doing it. As time went on, people kept asking, “Yoooo, what do you put in your beard to make it look like that?”. I used to say pussy juice. My best friend Chris used to get a kick out of that. The more people asked me, the more I said it, and the more Chris backed me up. I love you, bro. This eventually led me to want to do something more. Something tailored to men and their beard growth journey.
